If there is something that identifies the city of NY around the world, this is the Statue of Liberty. Located in a small island to the South of Manhattan (Liberty Island), it is considered much more than just a monument, since it is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy, representing also the independence of the United States. It has appeared in thousand pictures made by tourists evey day, that consider it as a must in their list of things not to miss.

It was built in France by the sculptor Fréderic-Auguste Bartholdi on a structure designed by Eiffel as a gift to the United States in 1886 as an achknowledgement of the friendship dated during the American revolution. For many years, it was allowed to be visited and many people climbed the 354 steps inside it. After September 11th, it was closed to visits and then it reopened again, but in a discontinuous way.

It has been the main character in many movie scenes and even in 1992 due to the Olympic Games in Barcelona, a sui generis wedding was cellebrated with the statue of Christopher Columbus of the Catalan city.

CONFIDENTIAL: If you want to save some queuing and the ferry ticket that brings you to Ellis Island and Liberty Island, we recommend you to take the ferry to Staten Island. It passes close enough to be able to make some pictures of the Statue and enjoy the views from the skyline in Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge. It leaves every half an hour and it is free.
