Amateur Night at the Apollo Theatre

We have always been willing to go to Apollo Theatre. Toni is very fond of R&B, soul and funk and this theatre is a mythic place for people who love this kind of music. Placed in the heart of Harlem, this theatre is a reference for Afro-American musicians. On the stage, several renowned artists were projected, such as Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Lauryn Hill or Michael Jackson.

We took a look at the schedule and, during our stay in New York, we could only go to an Amateur Night session. It is a talent contest with a similar to the American Idol style, which celebrated its 75th birthday in 2009.
The experience was a real must! The audience, mainly teenagers without any restraints, cheered for the ones who were talented, but didn’t save any shout or booooh for the ones who were not as they expected. We felt a bit inconvenient because we consider that each of them had prepared the show and, thus, this deserves a bit of respect. All in all, we had lots of fun and we had some laughs with the conductor’s jokes.

CONFIDENTIAL: We were really surprised by the big number of sponsors in each theatre, public buildings or college facilities. The main one in Amateur Night was Coca-Cola and they asked us for a big applause for it. A curious thing is the fact that this brand is not as popular in the US as it is in Europe, if we talk about market share, where Pepsi beats the US market as compared to other countries.
